Thanks to an old friend, we have obtained some vintage 4x5 view cameras for teaching at the Denver Darkroom. To celebrate, we have redesigned the Large Format (LF) workshop to include more hands-on 4x5 shooting and student loan of a 4x5 camera during the session and at home to complete the assignments.
Large format is the tool of choice for stunning clarity of detail and a gorgeous tonal range. With 4x5 inch negatives, grain issues disappear. Other special features include perspective and focus control, as well as exquisite density control of the negative through processing adjustments, i.e., zone system techniques. This workshop provides an opportunity to examine some of these advantages close-up with plenty of hands-on experience.
Working with Large Format will also enhance your understanding of the photographic process, for it requires thoughtful attention to its every aspect of the process: This includes set up, focus, exposure, lighting and composition, through to negative processing and printing options. Another advantage of 4x5 is the easy testing of shooting setups with Polaroid film for total elimination of guesswork.
This two session class is strictly limited to 8 students to ensure everyone has a good chance to work with the Darkroom's cameras. Six weeks of darkroom time is included in the class fee!
